Google Search Console

Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools) is a free tool from Google that gives you a direct view of how Google sees your website. It shows which queries your website appears for, in what positions, how many people click through to you, whether you have any indexing problems, and how your Core Web Vitals are doing. It is the only tool that provides genuine data straight from Google — not estimates like paid SEO tools.

Performance overview — the key section

The Performance section shows four key metrics: total clicks (how many people came from Google), total impressions (how many times your site appeared in results), average click-through rate (CTR), and average position. You can filter the data by queries (keywords), pages, countries, devices, and time period. This data is invaluable for spotting opportunities — you look for queries where you have lots of impressions but few clicks (room to improve meta tags).

    Indexing and coverage

The Pages section shows how many of your pages Google has successfully indexed and how many it hasn't. It shows reasons for non-indexing: page blocked by robots.txt, duplicate content, redirect, 404 error, or soft 404. Regular review of this section is essential — you find out whether Google is indexing all important pages and whether there are issues you don't know about. For a new website, the first step is submitting the sitemap right here.

Core Web Vitals and mobile usability

Search Console contains a Core Web Vitals report that shows real data from actual users — not synthetic tests. You can see how many URLs have good, needs-improvement, or poor values. The Mobile Usability report then flags mobile-display problems: text too small, interactive elements too close together, or content wider than the screen.

    Practical use for SEO

Search Console is most powerful when you use it actively: submit the sitemap after launching the website, regularly check indexing errors, analyse keyword performance, and optimise pages with high impressions but low CTR. Request reindexing of important pages after content updates. Link Search Console with Google Analytics for a complete picture. At Appitect we set up Search Console for every website and teach clients how to use it effectively.

    Practical example

After launching a new website for a client, we found in Search Console that 35 of the 80 pages had the status „Discovered — currently not indexed“. The cause was weak internal linking — Google had discovered the pages via the sitemap but didn't consider them important enough to index. After improving internal navigation and adding contextual links between related pages, 74 of the 80 pages got indexed within 3 weeks. Organic traffic grew by 95%.
