UI design (User Interface)

UI design (User Interface design) is the discipline focused on the visual design of the user interface of digital products. It covers everything users see and interact with — buttons, forms, navigation, icons, colours, typography, animations and the overall visual layout of the page. The goal of UI design is to create an interface that is not only aesthetically appealing but, above all, functional, intuitive and consistent. Good UI design builds trust — a professional-looking website signals a professional company.

The basic elements of UI design

UI design works with several key elements: a colour palette defines the visual identity and evokes emotions (blue = trust, orange = energy). Typography influences readability and the character of the website — the choice of fonts and their sizes is critical. Layout determines the hierarchy of information and guides the user's eye across the page. Interactive elements such as buttons, forms and navigation must be clearly recognisable and work well across all devices.

    Design systems and consistency

Modern UI design works with design systems — sets of rules, components and patterns that ensure visual consistency across the whole website or application. A design system defines how a button looks in all states (normal, hover, click, disabled), how forms are formatted, what the spacing between elements is and dozens of other details. At Appitect we create a design system for every larger project, because consistency is the foundation of a professional impression.

    Responsive UI design

Today more than 60% of visitors come to a website from mobile devices. UI design therefore has to be responsive — adapting to different screen sizes from mobiles through tablets to large monitors. That doesn't just mean shrinking the desktop version, but thinking about mobile UI as a separate design with its own hierarchy, navigation and interactions. Touch-friendly buttons, swipe gestures and simple navigation are crucial on mobile.

    Trends in UI design

UI design is constantly evolving. Current trends include: minimalist design with plenty of white space, micro-animations for better feedback, glassmorphism (transparent, glass-like effects), dark mode as a standard, 3D elements and illustrations, and variable fonts for dynamic typography. It's important, however, not to follow trends blindly — good UI design always stems from user needs and project goals, not from what happens to be popular on Dribbble.

    Practical example

For a fintech client we designed a complete UI design system for a personal finance app. We created a colour palette conveying trust (blue and green tones), designed 40+ components (cards, charts, tables, forms) and defined rules for typography and spacing. The result is a consistent, clear application that users rate as one of the most user-friendly in the Czech fintech space.
